Ladder Bracelets

The beautiful thing about spring break, for me at least, is getting the time to work on all of those little projects that I’ve been dying to do for what seems like ages.  I’ve been accumulating so many craft magazines, books, and links, it’s practically impossible to sort through all of it!  The craziest part of the whole situation is the fact that I’m actually attempting to reorganize to fulfill my need to do some spring cleaning, so all of the crap I have lying around is driving me crazy!  The best way to take care of messy supplies:  Craft with them.

Ordinarily, I really suck at working with wire, but lately it has actually been kinda fun.  The first attempt at this sort of bracelet, though, has all sorts of issues, and I’m not so happy with it.  The inspiration came from the latest issue of Bead Style magazine, which is usually about as helpful has a computer manual written in Latin.  I’ve only received two copies because they were free, but this last one shocked me – There were actually projects I wanted to make.  Every other issue (As far as I can see) has really just been one big ad.  Even the projects are no more than lists of supplies to buy, which you’re instructed to string onto some wire, and you’re done!  I guess it’s better for inspiration… And cleaning out your bank account.  Though painfully expensive, I’ve gotta admit that the beads that they advertise are truly gorgeous.

So anyway, I tried again and came up with this.  I like it a lot more, so I’m almost okay with letting go of some of those nice glass beads.

They really do look pretty nice, probably much better in person, because as I’m now learning, jewelry is one of the hardest subjects to photograph.  In fact, I had so much trouble with backgrounds and lighting, the above picture was actually taken on the lid of my toilet!  That’s why it’s a bit reflective… but look how clear and bright it is!  (Don’t worry, it was clean.)

I tend to get better pictures outside, so the rest were taken on my patio, in case you were becoming worried.

Blooming Brooch

I’m almost finished knitting a very special shawl (Which you’ll hear much more about soon….) and I realized that it would probably need a brooch to be worn.  I don’t think I’ve ever owned a brooch before this day, so I set off to work on a little beaded flower.

I hope the colors will match…!

My Fuzzy Strawberry

Strangely enough, no matter how long I searched, there isn’t a single pattern on the internet [for free] that instructs you on how to make just a plain, stuffed strawberry.  Sure, there are pouches and flat refrigerator magnets, but not what I was after.

It’s not perfect, but I’m pretty damn proud of this little guy!  Not only did I somehow manage to crochet it, but I didn’t even use a pattern!  When I started, I realized I didn’t even know how to decrease with crochet, so I think my ‘skills’ have already come a long way.  Nonetheless, the leaves were impossible to crochet, (I tried about 4 different methods) so I ended up cutting them out of felt and sewing them on, carrying over the same thread to attach the little “seeds.”

Sadly, to get it to look that acceptable, it took me about two and a half hours, and in the process I stabbed myself so deeply with the needle that I bled on my shirt before I realized my finger was gushing blood.  Still, I’ve never made anything with a pattern before, with the exception of simple scarves, so I’m not complaining.

Happy Crafting To You!

Somehow I’ve managed to give out my entire stock pile of knit cupcakes – They all went so fast! With at least two or three upcoming birthdays to prepare for, I figured there was no time like the present to start replenishing my supplies.

Another pin cushion, mostly because I think the pinheads look better as sprinkles than the beads, but it’s also for another crafty friend, so I think the effort will be appreciated. Unfortunately, I’m running out of “realistic” frosting colors… The neon pink may be pushing it a bit.

Pitter Patter of Little Feet

[Before launching into my latest rant, I just wanted to send out a HUGE thank you to everyone who replied to my frantic post the other day. You guys were such a great help, I was so bewildered and panicked, every time I thought about it I just felt sick to my stomach. After being vegan for a solid 2-3 years now, you would think you have the whole reading-every-single-label routine down by now, but this one managed to slide past me for far too long. Anyway, your suggestions all mean more than words to me, and I plan on searching for the VegLife Vegan One supplement today if there’s enough time. I’m hoping they’ll have it at Wild Oats…? Anyway, once more, thank you SO much for all your support, I knew that if anyone out there could help me, it was my fellow veggies.]

———————————————————————————————————-

How out of the loop am I! Only recently, I learned that a friend of mine was expecting some big changes to her household hierarchy in the form of an addition; A very small, and possibly demanding addition at that! She will soon become an aunt, as her sister is now almost 8 months pregnant! Although my dear friend isn’t exactly thrilled about this news, I haven’t heard anything so exciting in a long time. You know what a new baby means – Tons of tiny knit lovies to create!

Getting straight to work, I dove right into the One Hour Baby Booties in Stitch and Bitch Nation. I must say, the title doesn’t lie – This was one of the fastest projects I’ve been able to whip up in quite some time! Instant gratification, huh? It makes me want to knit other sweet baby things, just because they’re so cute and easy. I have no doubt that they will be appreciated by the mother, so who knows… If I can get my hands on some soft and inspiring baby yarn, there might be a sudden surge in the number of miniature finished objects…

Wee Bunny

More free stuffed animal patterns? A very generous motion by Wee Wonderfuls – Go take advantage of the opportunity and make your own! It’s even the perfect time of year to make a sweet little bunny, with Easter on its way and all.

I liked the end product a lot more than my rendition of the pointy kitty, and it would have been even better if I hadn’t read the instructions as if I had the brain power of a green bean. Meaning; I didn’t really read them at all. Brilliant, huh? That’s why I ended up with the opening for the stuffing on the bottom, instead of the back. Let me too you, it’s surprisingly difficult to hand-sew in a perfect circle while trying to keep the stitches invisible. The bunny butt looks like it got mangled or chewed on! Bleh! Just… don’t turn it over and it looks fine. I guess.

Another stupid mistake left my bunny with a bit of blush, if you noticed. This is due to… crazy glue. You know how it is… I was busily gluing on the little beady eyes when – Oops! – I hit the side of the fabric with the glue brush. Of course, crazy glue give no margin for error, and it was immediately set in, with only chemicals strong enough to melt through skin that would be able to remove it. Considering my options (None), I decided that this is exactly what I had intended all along. Yeah, isn’t it cuter with blush?! ..Yeah…

Oh, and those ears… I managed to instantly loose the pattern piece for the ears, forcing me to draw my own… Not too horrible, in my opinion. I had a lot of trouble accepting that you were supposed to just zig-zag across the raw edges… I really hated the way it looked. Cutting out new pieces, I made them slightly larger for a seam allowance, and turned the pieces just like the body was made.

At least one thing worked out exactly right: I had just enough matching light pink yarn scraps to make the little pom pom tail.
