Nice photos. I visited two old war prisons some years ago, one in Scotland and one in Ireland. The striking thing about these kind of places is the heaviness that still lurks in the atmosphere even after so long; it depressed me quite a bit. How was the feel inside?
On another note, your website was blocked at my workplace today, it’s never happened before. I wonder if it was because it detected the word Alcatraz. Hmm strange…but now I can no longer access your site from work. :(
It is so striking that you mentioned feeling a certain “heaviness,” because that’s exactly the word I used to describe the experience to my dad. Yes, absolutely, I could feel it. It wasn’t scary or creepy, but there was a real weight to the air, a sense of darkness even in the best illumination. It’s very hard to explain, but clearly we’re on the same page here.
I’m surprised to hear that my little old blog was blocked! How strange. I guess I should stop being so controversial with all of my political rants and protests, huh? ;)
“To” Alcatraz?! Twitching a bit because that bathroom looks a whole lot like bathrooms that I have been forced to use in my student past ;). Lovely images. You captured the nuances of prison life past incredibly well. The tones matched the material and I love the second to last image. Absolutely beautiful, but then I wouldn’t expect any less from you :)
We did the trip a few years back – it was fantastic, I highly recommend it. Your Pics are fantastic!

Beautiful photos! Those bring back a lot of memories. My wife and I visited San Francisco back in 2004. We toured Alcatraz island, and took a boat ride under the Golden Gate Bridge. It was fun to see the sea lions on the docks, and I remember some great burritos we had on the Pier (39?). We stayed in a little cottage up in Napa valley, and drove out to Calistoga to soak in the mud baths. It was a short trip but we had a great time. Your photos sure turned out a lot better than ours though! :)

I had to look up Alcatraz and I never knew it situated in the SF Bay! I thought it was a Spanish city due to the name. How interesting though! Such gorgeous pictures, Hannah, I like the prison shots you took, that was pretty rad! Thank you for sharing this awesome experience! ❤
