Have a Bigger Slice of the Pie

Gingerly slicing through the packing tape and lifting each flap of the cardboard carton, one at a time, unboxing my very first copies of Easy as Vegan Pie was, both predictably and surprisingly, unreal. Entering the lineup as my fourth cookbook, the creative process had become second nature, from dreaming and scheming to writing down the results. It was all the same routine, albeit more challenging subject matter than ever before, producing the luscious glossy pages I had been imagining for well over a year, through all of the flops and resounding successes alike. Exactly as I expected, the content felt as familiar as the back of my hand, having poured over the tiny details for hours on end to reach this point.

But holding the hardcover in my hands, flipping past photos and recipes that had each taken on their own unique personalities with stories to share, the sensation is indescribable. It’s hard to believe that this really came from my own hands, while it feels close enough to be an actual piece of me, out in bookstores everywhere. I couldn’t be more proud to share my heart, and my pies, abroad.

This isn’t about me though- I know you’re here for some sweet and savory satisfaction! Yes, it’s true, there are indeed savory recipes thrown into the mix, for the first time in any of my personal publications. A book for everyone, the range of flavors covers all tastes, and includes many gluten-free, nut-free, and soy-free options throughout. The “look inside” feature on Amazon.com has yet to go live, so in the meantime, allow me to tempt you with a taste of the recipes within:

  1. I’m not sure I’ve ever met a pie I didn’t like! The one that comes to mind is the Toll House pie, which is basically a cookie baked in a pie shell. I’d love to try A LOT of the ones in your book!

  2. The caramelized onion and apple tart is calling to me! As well as at least a dozen other ones. Congrats on the cookbook, I can’t wait to check it out :)

  3. I would love to eat a custard pie that did not contain milk or wheat as I have food allergies. A pie that tasted really good.

  4. you had me at pumpkin speculoos. seriously, what a heavenly combo. congrats on your fourth book release!

  5. Congratulations, the book looks gorgeous! I want to try a lot of the recipes, but the one I would bake first is the mango sticky rice pie.

  6. I agree that I am most intrigued by the cannoli and speculoos pumpkin pies. They all sound so delicious! I need to start making my own pie, as I’ve never had any amazing ones (but I’m more of a pie and coffee in a diner at 2am girl).

  7. Oh my gosh, how to choose? i definitely want to make the lemon chia seed meringue pie (is that one pictured?) and the grapefruit shaker. and the birthday pie. basically all of them.

  8. yippeee!!! Another super beautiful book by Hannah! I’m so happy for you! Congratulations! The selection of recipes looks Amazing!!! :)

  9. I can not wait for this cookbook. I want to make ALL the pies! But to start I’ll make Rosemary Peach Tarte Tatin, followed by a Taco pie!

  10. Congrats on the 4th book! What an accomplishment! Also, holy pie, those all sound amazing–especially the savory ones like the Reuben pie. Mmm.

  11. I think my favourite pie is a fried chocolate hand pie (which barely counts as pie, really). I’d love to try the cookies ‘n’ cream fried pie!

  12. Oh my goodness, congratulations! It looks stunning! I love that you included savory recipes as well; tamales are my favorite food so I am really intrigued by the Tamale Pie. The Banana Tapioca Pudding Pie is calling my name, too. ;)

  13. Congratulations superstar! I can’t believe it was over a year ago that we sat on a bench outside the Bodies exhibit with you showing me early photos for this incredible collection. xo

  14. Oh! No! I do not have a USA address but will pay the delivery if I win your beautiful book. Hope you give me the chance! Cheers!

  15. Best wishes on the release of your fabulous-looking new pie book! I am not in the running for your giveaway since I’m going to purchase one right now! There is no way I can decide which pie looks most appealing to me because they all look incredible! But I am leaning towards the Banana Tapioca Pudding Pie. Best wishes again, talented Hannah!

  16. The book looks so gorgeous! I want to try a lot of the recipes, but the one I would bake first is the mango sticky rice pie!! It reminds me of a trip to Thailand.

  17. I can’t decide if I’ll try the Mango Chutney, the Spumoni or the Pistachio first! So many others are tied for second!! Can’t wait to buy this book! Way to go, Hannah!!

  18. Gorgeousness personified. Kudos Hannah and another highly desirable book to add to the recipe collection. I love your images, they are what makes your books truly special and your inventiveness with your subject matter is amazing :) Love the range of sweet, savoury, hot and cold varieties and you are right…there IS something for everyone here. My personal favourites (although it would be very hard to pick just one ;) ) are the Adzuki Bean Pie the frozen baklava pie ties with the chestnut crunch, the gingerbread walnut, the hazelnut tassies and the marzipan crostata and every single savoury pie is making me swoon. Here’s to a massive increase in demand starting right now! :)

  19. Oh. My. Goodness. I think the Speculoos Pumpkin is calling my name! My pregan favorite was always Kentucky Derby Pie. I still haven’t tackled a vegan version.

  20. Pies, specifically fruit ones, are my absolute favorite thing to bake! And each must be pronounced with a southern accent. Your drunken apricot pie sounds like something that would grace one of my potlucks, and would definitely be reduced to crumbs (perhaps before we even started dinner…) Looking forward to this new book!

  21. Ooh, my! Congratulations, dude! I must have missed the blog post or tweet or Facebook post where you mentioned that you were in the process of creating another work of art. This is fantastic news! Hooray! Thank you, also, for this very generous contest :) My favourite pie in the world, ever, was sugar pie (pre-vegan) and I spy a few contenders in your book—namely the maple one. You are magical! Cheers, dude!

  22. Best pie I have ever eaten was in my pre-vegan days, it was a cappuccino pie at Spaghetti Warehouse. Figures, soon after I had it they stopped selling it. Oh well, I wouldn’t be eating it now anyways! Boy, that was good though.

  23. I absolutely adore your cookbooks, Hannah, they are gorgeous and so creative. And I will enter this contest, because even though I’m Canadian, I could ship it over to my old roommate’s place and leave it as a gift for her if I win. :) As far as pies go, I really love those artificial chocolate pudding pies, ever since I was a little kid. I can’t even really say why – there’s just something about that chocolate jello pudding. So fake, but so good.

  24. I LOVE My Sweet Vegan and am so excited about your new cookbook! I have so many favorites, but the two that stand out most from MSV are the Chai Cheesecake and the chocolate pie with the ricemallow topping (forgot the official name!). I actually improvised once with that one and made a Smores pie: graham cracker crust, chocolate pudding filling (with silken tofu) and the ricemallow topping. TO DIE FOR!!!

  25. Congratulations, Hannah. I love going into the bookstore or library and thinking, “Hey, I know her!” (At least somewhat.) Can’t wait to try some of these.

    janet

  26. Oooh, I can’t wait to try the meringue. This always reminds me of my grandma and the pies she made for Thanksgiving. I’ve missed lemon meringue for a long time!

  27. Oh, so many sound delicious. Maybe Rosemary Peach Tart Tatine? Or Lemon Chia Meringue? Or Carmelized Onion and Apple? I am all over the place on this!

  28. I was waiting for this book!

My favorite pies tend to be custardy/creamy.. I’m sooo looking forward to the speculoos pumpkin pie recipe!

  29. my favorite pie ever is my grandmother’s lemon meringue pie, which i have missed since going vegan! that pie in the photo really intrigues me!

  30. Congratulations Hannah…beautiful cover…everything looks so tempting…I sure will lie to “look inside”.
    Have a wonderful week :D

  31. I love classic apple pie. And quiche, which is pie for dinner. Now that I’m gluten and dairy free, there is a distinct lack of pie in my life. I’m looking forward to your book, since I can probably eat some of these pies!

  32. My hands down favorite pie is coconut cream. The photo of that lemon meringue had my interested peaked. But then I read the words cannoli pie?! It’s only a matter of time before I add this book to my shelf.

  33. Congratulations! I’m intrigued by the savory pies. I’d love a big ol’ slice of Reuben Pie, and I can only imagine wonderful things from a Thanksgiving Pie.

  34. Congratulations! The book looks gorgeous. The best pie is always pumpkin! Thanks for the chance to win this.

  35. congratulations on your book! that’s an amazing feat :) everything on that list looks delicious. being from the south, my favorite pie is from the Varsity in Atlanta – peach pie!!

  36. Congratulations Hannah! You must be filled with immense pride and joy as you unboxed your box containing your hard work!

The pie book sounds really comprehensive in terms of its range of sweet and savoury pies! Beautiful photos as always! Am ecstatic for you!

  37. Congratulations on your new book! I have to say that these pies sounds super intriguing–tea tart? Banana ganache? Yes please! :)

  38. Looks stunning! Fried Green Tomato Pies sound absolutely delicious. I am generally much too lazy for pie making so this would serve as some real inspiration!

  39. Ooh hard call! I was going to say lemon chia BUT then I saw matcha mochi (my two favorite flavors) so I’m calling it a tie

  40. Best pie I’ve had in recent months was on my honeymoon at a pizza place in Maui. It was kind of like a cheesecake, using coconut cream as the base and throwing in lilikoi (passion fruit I think) and oh man, the mix of creamy and slightly tangy was so delicious, I wish I had some right now.

Looking up above, I’d love to try my hand at that thanksgiving quiche. Yum!

  41. The cookbook looks beautiful, congratulations with the new release, I would kill for a nice big slice from any of your desserts right about now! I will have to check it out on Amazon.com, thanks for the mention!

I would love to try the Adzuki Bean Pie & Banana Tapioca Pudding Pie from your Custard, Cream and Pudding Pies (I still have an Asian dessert addiction), Blood Orange Creamsicle Pie & Persimmon Chiffon Pie from your Frozen Pies, Roasted Strawberry & Tomato Galette & Island Breeze Pie from your Fruit Pies, Mango Sticky Rice Pie (WHAT?!) & Matcha Mochi Pie (DOUBLE WHAT?!) from your Wild Card Pies, and of course this delicious Cheesy Mac Pie & Thanksgiving Quiche from your Savory Pies.

Can I have all of them in time for Thanksgiving? I have an empty stomach right now, ready to eat all of them on that special day!

To answer your awesome giveaway, the best pie I’ve ever eaten was the Mile High Lemon Meringue pie in Boston. It was so good and it was my first time to try a vegan meringue pie. I am dreaming about it now and I am dreaming to make one of your pies, too!

Thank you for this awesome giveaway, Hannah! XX

  42. Chocolate Chipotle Sweet Potato Pie! Spicy, chocolately & a bit sweet sound perfect! The best pie I’ve ever eaten is my aunt’s pecan pie.

  43. Oh, my. I want a slice of them ALL! The best pie I’ve ever had was a honeade cherry pie my dad made. He passed away just a few months ago and. i found his recipe while cleaning out his apartment. Miss you, Daddy.

I’m drooling, though, over the pies above. Carrot cake pie? Primavera pot pie? Reuben pie? Bring it ON!

  44. Congratulations! I’m really upset though that I live in the UK and cannot enter but I am looking forward to buying your book and trying the recipes out :)

  45. These look and sound beautiful! Pies are such a special dessert. Thank you so much for this giveaway and congratulations!

  46. Oh my. Adzuki bean pie sounds amazing. I used to get red bean buns from a Chinese bakery across from Uwajimaya in Seattle. Now I’m in Dallas and I haven’t found anything comparable. I am so getting a copy of this book, whether I win it or not!

  47. I’m excited about the Mango Sticky Rice pie, amongst so many others! Thank you for the giveaway. Congratulations.

  48. Oh my oh my! So exciting! I’m dying to try the Maple ShooFly pie and the Speculoos pumpkin. Must be the fall weather…

  49. I can’t wait to try the New York Cheesecake pie! The best pie I’ve ever had is a homemade apple pie my sister baked for my birthday. It was the first year I went vegan and my sister went out of her way to learn how to make it vegan! She even drove out of her way to deliver it.

  50. Cannoli Pie…Strawberry Malted Milkshake Pie…Adzuki Bead Pie…Ginger and Walnut Pie…impossible to pick just one I want to try first! Best pie I’ve ever had, although not vegan, was a Chocolate Peanut butter Pie from a place called Yoders in Tampa, FL.

  51. Wow Hannah …. thank you for this give-away!! My absolutlely favorite pie is a an apple pie recipe that was shared by Dreena Burton (http://bit.ly/16nndAF). The crust is made from almond flour and coconut oil …. what a flavor combo to have that nutty almond crust with the baked apples.

But looking over your new cookbook’s table of contents, I see LOTS more options for favorites there!! The “Caramelized Onion and Apple Tart” really has my interest piqued, and I think that would be the first one I’d try from your cookbook!

  52. I do have a sweet tooth but my faves are savory pies!!
They are a wonderful dish to share . I cant wait to try your Spaghetti squash and meatball pie!

  53. Congrats on your new book! My husband loves banana pie but that is one I’ve never attempted to make. I love chocolate so the Frankenstorm Pie sounds awesome!

  54. There are so many that sound fantastic – especially the ones with what seem to be Hawaiian inspired names…but I think it’s the Maple Shoo-Fly that is striking my fancy the most right now!

  55. I’m so excited about all the savory pies! They’re reminding me of the best pie I ever ate, an amazing tofu-vegetable quiche at a little cafe in Lyon, France.

  56. I am not a fan of cake or cupcakes, frosting makes my mouth feel funny. But pie? I will take two slices any day. There are lots of amazing sounding pies on that list, but I think I would try the Lemon Chia Seed Meringue Pie first. Yumm!

  57. Oh my goodness. I’ll HAVE TO GET THIS BOOK. I don’t care if I don’t need more recipes.. that looks amazing! I would love to make all of them, but I’ll pick the elvis for now.

  58. I would like to try the Speculoos Pumpkin Pie first and my son would love the Root Beer Float Pie. Of course, being from Ohio, we would also have to try the Buckeye Pie right away too!

  59. I have very fond memories of shoo-fly and amish vanilla (kind of like a vanilla custard, with a crumbly top) pies from a harvest festival my family and I would go to in eastern Washington. So the maple shoo-fly sounds pretty amazing to me!

  60. I’m kind of a sucker for savory pies — probably because vegan versions of them are harder to come by. So I’m super excited about the Caramelized Onion and Apple Tart, especially since fall is here and I want to make EVERYTHING out of apples. Pear Praline and Black-Bottom Macaroon pies grabbed my eye too though…yum.

  61. My favorite pie is probably chocolate pudding pie, followed by key lime pie– which I’ve been trying to make the perfect vegan version for years… it will happen some day! The one that reached out and grabbed me from yours is the Apricotta Tart– that just sounds delicious! Congratulations on the new book– that’s so exciting!

  62. My mind cant get past the Cannoli Pie! I dont think I’ve seen such a tempting list of recipes before – I would love to have this book! And my hubby’s ever present sweet tooth would thank you, haha

  63. Congratulations on your latest book! The Strawberry and Tomato Gallette sounds interesting and delish!

  64. Congratulations on the new cookbook! I wouldn’t know where to start with these recipes—the Matcha Mochi Pie, Watermelon Chiffon Pie, and Pistachio Pudding Pie all sound so wonderful. You’ve come up with a lovely list of pies!

  65. Wow! I love pies, sweet pies, savory pies, tarts, galettes, I just simply love pie(and so does my husband) The list of new pies from your book all sound amazing, but the first one I would make is going to be the “Chocolate Chipotle Sweet Potato Pie”!

  66. Wow, your book sounds amazing! My favorite pie? Well, I actually have a couple of favorite pies: I have very fond memories of my Grandmother’s pies (she made AMAZING crust!), and her huckleberry pie in particular. Her sister-in-law would send her huckleberries from Northern California by Greyhound Bus, and those pies were absolutely amazing. After my Grandmother died, I would visit my Great Aunt a few times a year (one of her younger sisters), and she would make the most amazing apple pies using apples from her own orchard… and biting into that pie crust, it was clear that they’d both learned their skills from their mother! I’d be willing to give it a shot to see if I can measure up to their legacy with your cookbook! :)

  67. Chocolate Chipotle Sweet Potato Pie. Chocolate Chipotle Sweet Potato Pie. Chocolate Chipotle Sweet Potato Pie. It sounds memorizing, and also delicious.

  68. I would love to try any of the pies, but the figgy pudding pie sounds really interesting since I love figs. My mom was the best pie maker ever & I loved her mince meat pie ( no meat as some people seem to think), she always made it for the holidays.

  69. I love anything marzipan, so the marzipan crostata would be my first pick! Congratulations on the new book. Another fantastic achievement for you and contribution to a more compassionate–and delicious–world.

  70. Oh my gosh. Those pies look awesome. I would love to try all the savory ones, and then the mud pie. :-) My personal fave that I make is a pecan pie. (I make a pretty darn fabulous one.)

  71. Far out fruit pies spin my spurs so I’m dying to know what a Black and Blue Licorice Pie is! You’ve totally hooked me with that title. My mom’s baking forte was pies and her lemon blueberry muerbeteig was my favorite…followed closely by her blueberry brimmer pie. So yeah, I’m kinda hoping Black and Blue Licorice Pie has blueberries somewhere in the mix. :)
    Congrats on another beautiful book!

  72. I love old-fashioned pies and tarts. My favourite is a Swedish applesauce crumble pie which is really easy to make but so delicious. I am very interested in finding out how you made eggfree meringue and quiche fillings. Haven’t had success with these so far…

  73. I love me a great coconut cream pie! However, when I think of eating pie, and eating the best pie I’ve ever tasted, I’m brought back to when my great grandmother was alive. She made the most AMAZING apple pie!! She was an incredible cook all around but nothing could top her pies!!!!

  74. Can’t wait to try all of your recipes in your new book. I hope my taste and look as awesome as your pictures!

  75. Thanksgiving Quiche sounds awesome. I’d love to make that for this thanksgiving….I am always looking for stuff to tempt my non-vegan family members to try.

  76. I’ll never forget making fresh blackberry pie when I first moved up to the Pacific NW. It’s so fun making lattice-top pies!! Pumpkin is another favorite that I could eat anytime of the year. I love eating cold pumpkin pie for breakfast the day after Thanksgiving. Mmmmm…!

Oh my goodness! Your pie recipes look AMAZING! Would love to know how to make all of these pies vegan. Where to begin?! Cannoli Pie sounds delizioso! I’m very intrigued by your Watermelon Chiffon Pie! I once had a watermelon sandwich that was outstanding so the idea of having watermelon PIE is way too cool for words. The Rosemary-Peach Tarte Tatin sounds lovely. Ooo, the Chocolate Zucchini Pie sounds like another winner. Love the idea of getting more veggies in every type of recipe!

Congrats on your book! Can’t wait to check it out sometime!
    -Emily

  77. Congratulations on the publication of your book! It’s so exciting to have your hard work and efforts displayed for all to enjoy and use. The best pie to me is honestly a local favorite, Sugar Cream Pie. An Indiana specialty!

I’ve looked through your list and I’m not sure what I would make first. Buckeye pie? Pistachio pudding pie? Gingerbread walnut sounds great for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Though I am quite curious as to what a Rueben pie would be!

    Many congratulations!

  78. This book looks amazing! Congratulations! I am new to the world of vegan cooking. I just was diagnosed with egg and dairy allergies. I am having a hard time with this change … especially with baked goods. I can‘t help comparing things to what I am used to eating, and nothing tastes “right” to me. These pies look awesome. I would particularly like to try the black bottom macaroon pie. The pistachio pudding pie also sounds amazing. If there is anything close to pecan pie in there, I would be thrilled, too! This cookbook sounds like it would have plenty to help me become accustomed to vegan baking. I love the addition of savory pies, too! Again, congrats on your book. It looks good enough to eat!

  79. Congratulations on a new book! I have your first book, My Sweet Vegan, and I was impressed with the recipes I tried. I especially loved the Root Beer Cupcakes! I remember when I first made them, it was around Halloween, and I was attending a fund raising party, so thought to make them. Because I was so involved in making the cupcakes, I didn’t put much thought into my costume, so before I left the house, I put on an old house robe, wrapped my hair in a towel, and slathered shortening with flour on my face, because I couldn’t find the Noxzema. It was hilarious and the Root Beer cupcakes were a hit with everyone, especially my DH. You are one creative person Hannah, I can’t wait to see you new book.

  80. As a76 year old new vegan, I would love to introduce my family to your wonderful recipes. Your onion apple pie is very enticing.

  81. I really like it when a book is available to “look inside,” on Amazon, AND there is something of value inside, like recipes! Now don’t get excited everyone, there are no actual pie recipes, but there is a recipe for home-made 5-Spice Powder. How cool is that? Even though I am already quite familiar baking with almond, coconut flour and chick pea flour, I never even heard of Green Pea Flour!

I ran down the list of Pies, and have decided that I need to make the Lemon Chia Seed Meringue Pie from the Custard, Cream and Pudding category. The Frozen pie category was tough choosing just one, but here goes, um, The Root Beer Float Pie closely followed in second by the Marzipan Crostata in honor of my mom who’s from Germany and loves anything Marzipan. It would have to be the Pear Praline pie for my friend Anita who has a pear tree in her yard. In honor of my brother Ralph and his family in Kailua, it would have to be the Mango Sticky Rice pie in the Wild Card category. Finally, for my DH, who likes his food with a kick, the Wasabi Pea Pie.

  82. Double Chocolate Truffle Tart and Frankenstorm Pie look yummy. Which are your favorite chocolate recipes from the book? Also curious about the Mango Sticky Rice Pie since I come from an Asian gluten-free household. My favorite pie has always been Apple pie, so of ourse going to have to try yours!

    1. It’s always so hard to pick favorites, but of the chocolate pies, I think it’s a tie between the Frankenstorm and Chocolate Zucchini. Both so good, and in such different ways! I hope you have the opportunity to try all of your picks ASAP. :)

  83. I know it’s first on the list, but I love red bean desserts, so that adzuki bean pie sounds really interesting!
