It’s a Small World

Proving without a shadow of a doubt that simply downsizing everyday items makes them instantly adorable, Anna Hrachovec has created an overnight sensation with her ongoing series of tiny objects. Ranging from animals to edibles to computer equipment, you name it and there’s a good chance that Anna has a yarn-and-fiberfill replica that could fit in the palm of you hand. After slowly doling out a few tiny patterns in irresistible sets for the past year or so, her latest book, Teeny-Tiny MochiMochi: More Than 40 Itty-Bitty Minis to Knit, Wear, and Give has finally been unleashed upon the world, bundling together scores of quick, cute knits.

For any knitter that has been disappointed by the crocheted amigurumi craze, unable to create such adorable stuffed toys, this is the book for you! Containing such a wide variety of items that there’s bound to be something that everyone will love, one of my favorite aspects of these mini knits is how quick they are to make. Small size means small time commitment, so you can churn these cuties out in no time– A particularly useful fact if you’re stuck for last-minute gifts.

As one of Anna’s devoted test-knitters, I can’t claim an unbiased opinion here, but I can tell you that I would have purchased this compilation of cuteness anyway. I mean honestly, how could you resist patterns for…

…A tiny cupcake, complete with rainbow seed bead sprinkles?

How about a plump, green pear, almost realistic enough to imagine out in the orchards?

Don’t forget about the starches; a baked potato topped off with beaded chives and a generous pat of sewn in “butter” would sure hit the spot!

Anna has even managed to create the ever-elusive vegan fried egg! I must admit though, it was a bit fibrous for my tastes.

I did slightly modify my knits to exclude the eyes, but only because this vegan prefers not to have food that can look back at me. Still, the adorable factor hasn’t suffered in the least, if I do say so myself. While the section of tiny foods was clearly my focus, there’s still a whole world of tiny knits to explore far beyond the faux edibles. The miniature lion is next up on my knit list.

For all you eager crafters out there, you’re in luck- Ever generous, Anna and her publisher have offered to giveaway a second copy of Teeny-Tiny MochiMochi to one lucky blog reader! To secure your copy, all you need to do is leave me a comment, using correct contact info, telling me what item you’d like to see as a tiny knit next. Anna is still hard at work on this series, so who knows, you may see your suggestion show up on her blog some day soon! Be sure to comment before Wednesday, August 24th at midnight EST, at which point I’ll choose a winner via random number generator.  Open to residents of the US only.  So ready your double-pointed needles and start thinking small; there’s a whole tiny world to explore!

  1. they are so tiny I wonder what size needles she uses, probably custom made for knitting tiny!
Anna has done so much but I’d like to see a tiny elephant if she hasn’t done that yet.

  2. I came her for the recipes and didn’t know you were a knitter, too! I’ve admired her patterns and really need to try them out!

    I’d love a tiny hedgehog.

  3. My first thought was elephant, but since that’s been taken already, I think a pair of cherries would be really cute.

  4. How cute! I love the cupcake. If it has not been done yet, an ice cream cone would be cute. Or coffee cup. Or a pie. Oh the ideas! Thanks for the giveaway, Hannah!

  5. I’m still in an amigurumi craze. Would love to knit some of those cute little creatures- I bet my niece and nephew would really like them.. I love Anna’s ballet dancer…I’m envisaging making a little village of people and houses and little trees or a beach! with sun loungers for mini swimsuit wearing people and volleyball players!

  6. Oh wow, this hits so many of my little obsessions – small things, knitting, and food! I can barely choose one thing. A layer cake would be cute! Or an ice cream cone!

  7. I was going to say a gnome, but it looks like there is one on the cover of the book! I love garden gnomes!

  8. Love them all, but the mini-cupcake is the best! I’d love to see some mini vegetables, like tomatoes or brussel sprouts….

  9. Too cute! I didn’t have time to peruse the whole site, so she may have made one already, but I’d love to see a tiny giraffe!

  10. I’ve loved Anna’s patterns for years. What a nice surprise to see her mentioned on your blog! Some ideas for new tiny knits: ladybug, raccoon, skunk, pig, tea set, Christmas tree, gummy coke bottles (like the candy)…

  11. so cute!!

If i stick with the food theme the photos above show, I would love to see a tiny knit apple (that’s the upstate New Yorker in me!).
But a tiny fairy would be cute, too!

  12. oh those are so cute. what size needles does one use? i’m not sure my old eyes could handle work w/ needles and yarn that small but i would sure like to win the book and give it a try. i would like to see a small bunny – though i’m guessing she might of already done that. and i see someone else has already suggested a hedghog – i 2nd that. how about a little skunk?

    1. These patterns tend to call for size 1 US (2.25 mm) double pointed needles, but I’ve also found that if you don’t mind the end results being slightly larger, you can use size 4 or 5 US needles with worsted weight yarn instead.

  13. i have a sneaking suspicion that anna has already created this, but i’d love to see a teeny tiny saguaro cactus! i moved to RI from AZ six years ago, and i would love to be able to sport a cute, knitted cactus pin on my winter coat, to remind me of warm days back home.

  14. There are probably copyright problems with my suggestion, but I would like to see a tiny Raggedy Ann doll. Raggedy Andy, too.

  15. I’d like to see a tiny glass of milk and a tiny plate of cookies – imagine how cute that would be as a Christmas tree ornament!

  16. I’m glad Anna highlighted your blog! It’s my first time visiting and I love the recipes and the patterns! What a fabulous double whammo combo! I shall be coming back!

And I love LOVE the tiny ami’s. I have Anna’s first book and I would love this new one. If I were to wish upon a star, I’d wish for a whole doll house! Wouldn’t it be great to play house with our own little amigurumi objects?

    Irene (aka prymnumber on Rav)

  17. I ambso excited someone has come up with this idea! I have made so many things from the first book. My grandchildren love when I make the tiny things!

  18. I’m a fan of Anna’s work and all the teeny items are so cute! I’d like to see a tiny Christmas tree, a dragon, and tiny flowers, if she hasn’t done those already!

  19. How about a Prairie Dog? My daughter loves them after seeing a bunch in the Black Hills this summer.

  20. I just love mochimochi land. I love all her teeny tiny things. I would absolutely love this book. I would like to see a tiny chihuahua. Buddy, my chihuahua, agrees with me.

  21. I wonder if we have a full zoo of mini-critters yet? I know she’s made several tiny zoo animals but there have to be more that are missing.

  22. Wow, so many cool ideas. Both the photos and the suggestions. That pear was so cool, and the baked potato too. I really love all the mini food. Maybe a mini mug of hot chocolate with marshmallows… a frothie cappuccino… spaghetti and meatballs…

  23. Thank you so much!
Tiny dragon was the first thing that came to my mind! To go along with the tiny wizard and the tiny princess, but then I remembered there was already a tiny dino! Hm, then maybe, a tiny mermaid or a tiny jelly fish?

  24. At first I was going to say a tiny fondue pot, but then realized this is the wrong blog for that! :) Maybe a tiny film reel? They’re all so cute!

  25. I would like to see a little red wagon maybe with a cute little something riding in it. Kitten or puppy? Thanks for the giveaway. Debbie H

    tiny cuttlefish
    tiny fedora
    tiny pony

  27. I’d like to see a small teacup and saucer. I would love to win the book. The patterns look like so much fun.

  28. These actually look DELICIOUS! The same thing happens with my mocha frosting, where it appears to separate slightly (I’ve always assumed it was the oils in the espresso separating). But the taste is perfect. I just bought your second book Hannah. Always so impressed, even if I don’t have time to blog these days or read other peoples’ very often!

  29. I’d love to see some tiny Chinese food in a take out box, with maybe some potstickers on the side. The tiny food is so interesting and so hard to capture. I think it shows real design skill to be able to remove the “faces” from the teeny-tinies and still have them be just as cute. Nice knitting!

  30. I can hardly wait to see Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi. I think a tiny kitten or tiny sheep would be adorable.

  31. I would love to see a teeny Dillo. A Dillo is a vegan Twinkie created by Kelly Colabella of Cakewalk Vegan Bakery here in Salt Lake City. I would love to make a bracelet/necklace of chocolate, raspberry and plain Dillos with a cupcake or two. My kids and I have enjoyed Anna’s tiny creations and blog posts for several years and I plan to make her tiny chicken next.

  32. Aww, those are so cute! I’d love to see a tiny VEGGIE PLATTER. :) Complete with carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and cucumber!

  33. I’d love to see a tiny Eiffel Tower, a tiny purse, a tiny lipstick, and a tiny pair of sunglasses.

  34. Hmmm……well I’d like to see a tiny washing machine to “felt” all the teeny tiny mochi. LOL

  35. I’d like to see a tiny alpaca/llama! Maybe knit with alpaca yarn? Make a whole herd and then when people ask you where you got your yarn, just point at them. “My alpacas made it for me.” (I have a little obsession over alpacas right now and I don’t think I’ve ever seen one on Anna’s blog)

  36. Platypus!!! I believe I saw a unicorn I would love to see the pattern for, too. Great stuff. Keep up the teeny-tiny ever so cute work. :)

  37. what a killer job to be test knitter for Anna!

I have a handful of her patterns that she has made available thru her site!

I make them for my toddler son and he adores all of them!

I would love to see more tiny dino’s and tiny bugs.

    I have a boy….that’s why!

    thanks for the contest!!!!

  38. I love MochiMochi! I’d love to see a chicken. Or if you wanted a food-related suggestion – how about a tiny cob of corn?

  39. I love Anna’s tiny objects…and all her other designs, too! Your tiny edibles are adorable! How fun to be a test knitter for MochiMochi! I think a tiny owl or hedgehog would be so cute :)

  40. A tiny piano, or even a whole slew of tiny instruments would be fun! I don’t recall seeing her do an instrument, but I’ve seen so many I could have forgotten!

  41. So stinkin’ cute! This book is definitely on my wish list – and I would love to see a tiny pretzel :)

  42. What about the Italian type mushrooms with the red dots on them and some fairies to sit under them? Love all these tiny items, just precious!

  43. OH I MUST have this book!!! I love anything that is off-scale (too big, but especially way small!). I woujld LOVE to see a teeny moose, or a teeny designer handbag…the ideas are endless!!!

  44. I vote for a tiny hoagie. Of course you get to choose what kind, but it would need lettuce and tomato as a start.

  45. I grew up with standard poodles – how about a poodle complete with a sparkly collar and a matching leash

  46. I would like to see a ladybug. my 11yo has become very excited about knitting these tiny creatures, she wants this book for her birthday.
    Thanks

  47. I’d like a teeny cookie jar–so that I’d have no regrets after eating *all* the teeny cookies!

  48. Aw! The little baked potato was my favorite. I’d like to see tiny animals! Little giraffes with stubby legs and short necks, dachshunds, and hedgehogs :>

  49. These are very cute! I would like to see a tiny kagami mochi with the tangerine or a tiny sushi roll!

  50. Yay! A chance to win the book! I’d love to see a tea pot and cup, or a gingerbread man, or a rasher of bacon and a frying pan to go with the eggs… :D

  51. Oh dear these are ridiculously cute Hannah!!! :) I love all of them, hard to choose a favourite. The baked potato is so cute! But I can’t resist a fake fried egg.
