Quick, name one dessert accompaniment that goes well with absolutely every sweet dish imaginable. How could any single thing go well with such infinite flavor and textural possibilities? Easy- Just reach for the whipped cream. Lightly sweetened and enhanced with just a drop of vanilla extract, this classic confection accompaniment is almost universally loved by both young and old, serious sweets lovers and occasional enthusiasts, often piled on in voluminous mountains of fluffy white cream. However, for those who seek dairy-free options, the alternatives are still rather dismal. If I had a dime for every “tofu whipped cream” recipe I saw authors trying to fob off as an appropriate substitute, well… You know how it goes. It’s just a shame that those approaches almost always result in a heavy glob that merely tastes like sweetened bean curd.
Before you start bemoaning the lack of a vegan version, fear not, as this field is rapidly expanding! Now, not too long after the heaven-sent Soyatoo whipped topping hit US shelves and offered the first viable taste of luscious, vegan cream, there’s something new to get excited about: Rice Whip. Yes, you heard me right, a rice-based, aerosol whipped cream, completely vegan and soy-free!
Perfectly light and fluffy, the texture is everything you could ask for- Plus, the aerosol container makes dispensing each serving fun and easy. Clearly created to provide contrast to even the heaviest dessert, this pillowy fluff isn’t the least bit sweet by itself, but picks up just enough sweetness when eaten together with a more sugary main dish. For those seeking a vegan, soy-alternative to whipped cream, run, don’t walk to your nearest health food store, and stock up on this unique new product!
For those with no trouble digesting soy, however, I will admit that I still prefer the standard Soy Whip over this one. It’s a very faint aftertaste, but if you look for it, there’s just a hint of starchy rice flavor that I detect in the Rice Whip which detracts from the overall experience. Such an offense is very minor, of course, and choosing this creamy topping over anything else would certainly be no sacrifice!
I have been thinking about making a trip to Whole Foods to find this! Did you find it there?
I just discovered the soy version of this recently…im sure it will be ages before they get this rice version in! I do like the sound of it though, i ususally buy rice milk instead of soy.

We also have this whipped cream, rice and soybeans the same brand :)
It is good, not as good as I’m home with the “ISI WHIP” but that troubleshoots people who are not lucky enough to have a “ISI WHIP.
Only default chantilly never empties completely, it remains responsible and can not get the rest :(
I have not tasted the rice, I will do to complete my article on vg-zone ;)
Oh, NICE! I’ll have to track this down!
Ooh….I’ll have to be on the look out for this.
Not being hindered by dairy or other restrictions I never even knew there would be substitutes for actual whipped cream, but I guess it’s a good thing that there is! I am tempted to try it, just to see what it tastes like, although I think the possibilities in the Netherlands to find this are probably really really small.
I found this same Soyatoo rice whip when I was visiting my brother in Holland in June. We got it at a health food store in Amsterdam. I’ve been looking for it in the States ever since, to no avail!
Rice whip, how interesting! I love the Soyatoo whipped cream, which I can’t get here in Israel, but always bring with me from Finland…
I am totally with you! I also prefer the soy version, which, to me, has a much more pleasant taste.
I hope to try this soon!
Thank you for your review!! I need a soy-free alternative.
I was SO excited when I found the soy one in my local health food store – I used to like the dairy one in my omni days, it’s good straight out the can! :)
I’ll have to pick up the rice one next time i’m in there, they sell that one too.
Wow, have to give a try, sounds and looks yummie! Will keep an eye next time a the grocery store ;-)
Soooo good. Those strawberries are making me blush! Yum….
It’s always nice to have a soy alternative. I can see how the rice whip could have an after taste. Our favorite whip, is coconut milk. Great on a non-dairy ice cream.
Oh, this is really good news. Good for the soy intolerant people. Thanks for sharing the information.
Fab review!
You know I do like rice milk, so I don’t doubt that I would like this too. I’ll be on the lookout for this one.
hehe exciting you have an option!! There really isn’t anything like ready whip! Love it!
Don’t forget whipped coconut cream: just chill a can of coconut milk, scoop the cream off the top, add a little vanilla and powdered sugar and beat on high for a minute or two. Rich, fluffy, creamy, and not coconutty at all!
Nice review. Good to know the differences.
This product has been available to Greece for about a year and a half and I have to say it’s amazing! Yes you can taste the rice, but in the same way that you can taste dairy in a dairy cream!! I actually like it much more than the soy version! You can check out my review here : http://www.veggie-wedgie.com/?page_id=56
Hi! I’ve been reading your blog for forever now! You post a lot of things about food, they all look delicious! But unfortunetly, I can’t cook yet. Do you ever post new crochet/ knitting patterns? All your patterns are so adorable and I have made at least half of them!
I’ve tried both versions of Soyatoo and I think the soy based version tates a lot better. Still, it’s nice to have a choice!!
This seems promising. I can’t STAND the regular Soyatoo stuff! I always want to like it, but the several times I’ve forked out the money for it, I was so disappointed by its chemical-like taste. :( I wish I liked it! It looks so yummy, but my tongue doesn’t like it!
Um, and I said “like it” about a million times in my post… Anyway, I want to try this!
I love that there are whipped cream alternatives out there like this!
We’ve had Rice whip in the UK for a little while now, however, it hasn’t really taken off much. Very few health food shops stock both varieties, with most sticking adamantly to only stocking the the original soya.
I have to admit, it has taken me a long time to adjust and appreciate the taste of the rice whip. It has a very distinguished taste and I would say, very distant in flavour to its soya counter part.
If you’ve always had the soya version, I doubt many people would prefer the rice alternative. Don’t get me wrong, I strongly support any new vegan product being launched, but this has a very obvious back taste and anyone trying to convince the friends and family that vegan food is just as good, is unlikely to succeed with Rice Whip.
I did say at the beginning of this comment ( seems a bit too long to be called that now hehe) that I now appreciate the product and given that I’ve been slating it mostly, it probably sounds a little odd. Basically, I have tried this product every other day to see if I could like it any more and over time I did. I have found that in certain desserts, its starchy taste actually compliments the flavours of the dish.
Just last weekend, for the first time i decided to try both whips atop one another on some chocolate mousses I had made and the flavour was perfect. With the overly sweet & silky combination of the soya whip and the more dense & subtle starchy flavour of the rice whip, when both put together, they worked wonderfully! If only Soyatoo could bring a blend whip out!
Anyway… sorry for the epic comment. I’ll finish there =P
This looks really tasty.
This is one product that is actually coming to Australia in the near future. I couldn’t wait before, but after your review I’m even more excited!!
I just tried this and really am liking it. I agree that it has a slight rice aftertaste that sort of reminded me of that rice cereal for babies, but the consistency is great and since I’m avoiding too much soy, this is a wonderful product in my opinion! It will be especially handy when I don’t have time to whip my own coconut cream. Plus, NO fat!!!! :)
I finally found it! I find it less sweet than soy …
