Come 2010, there will be a whole new reason to look forward to each new day… With the Crochet-a-Day calendar!  Yes, this fun page-per-day timetable has been around for a few years already, in addition to its sister Knit-a-Day calendar, but this next year’s edition is especially worth checking out.  Packed with a couple hundred creative new designs that are sure to get you inspired every morning when you flip the page, this one will also include a certain pattern that has some additional significance to me…

On May 19, 2010, my Basic Birds, the very first crochet pattern I ever wrote, will be featured!

Having been translated into over a dozen different languages and used to create a couple hundred little birds, I could have never imagined that this simple project would have become such a sensation.  An easy first amigurumi for newbies, or quick diversion for the more advanced, the fun part is how easy it is to make your own.  Each little face is slightly different, the shape of the body unique to the hands that made it.  So, how will yours be different, intentionally adapted or not?  If you don’t want to wait for the calender, and all of the other fun patterns that come with it, the free pattern is right where it’s always been.

  1. CONGRATULATIONS!!! That is such a big deal, I’m very excited for you. I haven’t heard of these calenders but since I’m recently so into both knitting and crochet, I’ll have to get them. I made lots of amigurumi toys over the weekend, I’m attempting to make my own mobile with them. I also made some sardine kitty toys for a friend. Are you on Ravelry?

  19. Yaey congratulations! The birds are so cute. I’ve always wanted to crochet little animals but I’m scared that I’ll mess up. I bought a crochet a day calendar once but never really used it. I loved seeing all the different patterns though.

  23. Congratulations – I’m so glad that these cute little birds will get a chance to further influence other new and aspiring crocheters, they were one of the first amigurumi patterns that I completed and they really made a difference to my crochet!

  33. Hi! Congratulations! I can only imagine how proud you are :o) I just wanted to let you know I’ve made an alligator baby girl, inspired in your alligator baby (published on april 16, 2007). I’ve used dpns instead of crochet (mostly… I couldn’t deal with the eyes and limbs).

  34. ack, too bad I can’t read any other patterns than German ones (and they are already quite a challenge for me as I am more of a “watching” kind of learner) , – those calendars sound too good to pass…
