Calling it a “whirlwind trip” doesn’t really do justice to the unbelievable circumstances I found myself in just this past weekend; if anything, we came storming through Europe more like a tornado, touching down only long enough to buzz about busy Christmas markets near Wiesbaden. Forcibly removing myself from piles of work waiting at home, it was a welcome respite from endless homework and writing assignments. There may or may not have been one ridiculous, borderline outrageous impulse-buy that made the following photos possible, but can I tell you? After working relentlessly all year, it was worth it to totally spoil myself for the holidays.
The following are some of my favorite shots, snapped in Wiesbaden, Luxembourg, and the nearby surrounding areas.
Wow! What fun. The top photo reminds me of when I was in Beziers in the south of France a couple years ago but Luxembourg sounds wonderful! I hope you sampled some of those chestnuts (a cheaper holiday treat for yourself)

Dude, that’s wonderful! What took you to Germany for just a weekend? Congratulations on the fancy gift that you bought yourself. It’s justified because you put it to very good use (just in case you were feeling guilty) :) Good luck with your assignments!
Whew, thank you, I did kind of badly about such a crazy purchase, and at the last minute, too.
We went because my dad is over in Germany for the time being, so we had him guide us around a bit, and then took him back home with us for the holidays. A good deal for everyone, I think. :)
So jealous!! I really miss Germany this time of year.

I must admit, I was perpetually falling asleep midday for the whole week following the trip… But it actually wasn’t so bad, all things considered! I do use a light box in the winter to manage my SAD, and I hear that’s supposed to help correct your internal clock, too.

Even a very short trip to Germany is wonderful this time of the year…the Christmas markets are not to be missed.
Sometimes we all need to blasted out of our work-a-day rut and you did it with such style. When I read your last post about your trip I was hoping you’d post about the culinary scene for vegetarians in Germany. My friends are always inviting me there but I’ve always declined thinking that I’d probably starve.
I will admit, the eating situation was a bit rough at times because we spent a lot of time on the move (not knowing where we’d end up or being able to scout out restaurants in advance) or stuck in Christmas markets (where the primary edible was some sort of wurst on a bun) but it’s definitely doable. The farmer’s market was wonderful, and I was able to stock up on tons of fresh fruits and veggies to munch on. A surprising number of people do know excellent English, so in most cases they’ll have an idea of what you want if you ask for specific things- Try to modify existing dishes, like asking for a bean salad but without cheese, etc. Japanese food is a good bet most of the time, where you can find tofu. No, I can’t say you’ll be able to have much traditional German fare as a vegan, but you won’t starve at all. Just pack backup protein bars to be safe!

Oh I know, and was waiting for you to chime in here so I’m happy that you didn’t miss a beat. ;) It’s quite nice to feel so wanted! I actually will suggest Australia as a possible future trip… It’s way outside my realm of experience, but I know that at least my sister was there for a few days and loved it, so I can easily convince her to join my team and gang up on the parents. You’ll be the first one to know if there’s a remote possibility at any point, even before the grandparents!
