Not a Peep Outta Me

Glancing down supermarket aisles piled high with colorful bags, boxes, and even buckets of candy, each one adorned with both cute and creepy graphics, the temptation of Halloween treats looms large on my mind as we count down the days until All Hallows’ eve. Without some tried and true recipes to tide over my sweet tooth, this would be an incredibly morose time of year, tortured over treats filled with nasty animal products. But for all the fantastic homemade candy in the world, there’s still something to be said of the convenience factor when simply purchasing a special confection… And now, you don’t need to sacrifice your ideals to indulge your inner child this Halloween.

Sweet and Sara, one of my all-time favorite vegan companies (true fact: I have their logo tattooed on my wrist), has made this year’s Halloween about one hundred times happier, thanks to their introduction of large ghost-shaped mallows, using their signature vanilla marshmallow formula.

Slightly larger than your average peep, there’s absolutely no comparison between the two when it comes to quality. This giant pillow of fluffy sweetness is both impossibly light and dense at the same time, creating an almost creamy interior texture. Although I was certain it would be difficult to consume such a large quality of almost pure sugar at once, it was alarmingly easy to wolf down in one sitting, and still leave me craving more.

Sold individually online, each with a unique expression painted in bitter dark chocolate, these are by far my top pick for a purchased Halloween treat this year.

  1. aww theyre so cute. I havent had vegan marshmallows before, they sell them at a local shop but i always think its too expensive for marshmallows. These ghosty ones are so cute!

  2. I totally have one of these in my fridge right now! I think I’m going to try to hold out and save it for halloween. We’re excited to see what Sara comes up with for spring!

  3. I’ve been waiting to see vegan Dandies marshmallows on the shelves of my local co-op, as they’ve promised to start carrying them, but finally broke down and bought some in an order from veganstore.com And wow. How amazing. And all thanks to one of your previous posts.

Thanks for this post too. I will definitely try Sweet & Sara!

  4. Can anyone attest to how the S&S marshmallows survive shipping? I ordered some Dandies online a while ago and they arrived looking a little smashed & deflated. Still tasty, but I’d hate to see the ghosts suffer the same ghastly fate!

  5. Great minds think alike, it seems; I posted about Sweet & Sara this morning! I haven’t tried the ghost marshmallows, but I’m glad you made the connection with Peeps because I sure didn’t! Those used to be among my favorite treats and it’s exciting to me that S&S are now offering a vegan version! I can’t wait to see what they whip up for the holidays to come. :)

  6. Those are adorable. I have to admit I am one of those weird people that gets queasy at the thought of a peep, although those might surely change my mind.

  7. Those are so cool! I found somewhere selling them in the UK but there’s a stupid postal strike so they’ll never get here in time for halloween!

  8. I’ve tried Dandies, but not Sweet and Sara. These are so cute, and my husband loves marshmallows. Maybe I’ll order some and surprise him!

    Also, kick-ass tattoo.

  9. Is the texture any better than the regular S&S marshmallows? I really wanted to like them and tried them multiple times at every temperature I could think of, but I found the marshmallows to be waxy, dense, gooey, chalky, expensive little bricks. I love the thought (and look!) of a vegan peep, though.

  10. do you have the recipe posted somewhere for your marshmallows?
I have used a recipe but 3 of the 4 times I’ve made them, they are only 1/2″ wide, if that. not sure what I’m doing wrong.
