Still riding the last swell of the summer vacation wave, my daily routine is almost entirely the opposite of what I might have done last year. Still buzzing from caffeine, working into the long hours of the night, it takes a lot to finally close up the laptop and close my eyes. With my shift at work starting at 4:00, it’s almost reasonable to stay asleep for as long as possible, although now those times are stretching later and later into the morning, corresponding with my 3- or 4- am bed time. Waking up around 11 to an empty house, a comfortable quiet hangs in the air, as I slowly make my way into the kitchen, still clad in full pajamas for at least another hour. This may sound terribly lazy, but for the time being, this new routine seems to suit me just fine. Slowly sipping on coffee and contemplating the day’s tasks, the only thing that I might rather would be…

An appropriate lazy-day breakfast, perhaps! Of course, donuts are no longer a lazy treat, since I can’t just run out and pick up a box at the neighborhood Donking Donuts. Although it takes a bit of initiative to take on such a venture so “early” in the morning, it’s no trouble at all to whip up one or two felt donuts instead. Too bad that only satisfies the basic impulse, not so much my appetite!
What would you make for a lazy-day breakfast?

such a sweet post Hannah.
I used to be a late night person, for many years. Until one summer when I lived in the countryside in Italy, and discovered how much I love waking up early. Still, I often get home from teaching at 9 pm and still have to make dinner, so I have many late nights myself.
my favorite lazy day breakfast is always something special like waffles or crepes or french toast… with fruit and OJ and coffee… so un-original, but I think that’s why it’s so satisfying.
I have yet to make vegan donuts… I’m not sure I’d be able to eat them after seeing how they’re made!

Aww! I love this post! Those donuts are so beautiful, I love the sprinkles.
Hmmm…i think my lazy day breakfast of choice would have to be soyrizo and hashbrown breakfast tacos with lots of hot-sauce. Mmmm!

Such cute donuts – I want one!! :0D
September 9, 2008 at 1:21 pm
P.S. – As a creature-of-habit, I’d prefer to make my lazy-day breakfast the same one that I eat everyday (and I’m far from being lazy) = banana/nut-butter oatmeal.

i don’t think it sounds lazy – just low-key and nice to sleep later! good for you on taking your time in the mornings! yay!
my lazy day choice for breakfast would probably be a hashbrown bowl – complete with: potatoes, tempeh bacon, green peppers, bell peppers, onions, and sriracha – smothered in real maple syrup. mmmmmmmmmmmmm!
the donuts are the cutest EVER!

The donuts are adorable! Is there anything you can’t do?!!
September 9, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Well, when I’m back in Seattle…Mighty O donuts all the way, baby! But this winter, it’s all about toast with Hannah’s amazing raspberry lemon jam!! :-)
September 9, 2008 at 2:35 pm
I haven’t had a donut in ages! The felt ones might not taste as good as the real thing, but they sure are cuter. My favorite breakfast on all days, lazy or not, is cereal. I can’t wait to get out of bed and have my bowl.

I have a “lazy” breakfast every weekend – I buy “Now and Zen” cinnamon raisin rolls from Trader Joe’s ($4.49 for 5 rolls) and keep them in the refrigerator. Warm up the roll in the toaster oven, slather with a Tb of maple butter ($12 at Rainbow Grocery, lasts a long time) and eat with chai over the backgammon board in the backyard.
Funny – all these bloggers are talking about the “last swell of summer” and ‘Indian summer” and preparing for winter — we’re just getting summer here! Sept and Oct are the nicest months in the SF Bay Area, and I’ll still be picking tomatoes in November! (But for the most part, it’s freaking cold year round close to the Bay – I’m not a fan of 55 degrees).

so cute! i made your actual doughnuts (from my sweet vegan) recently though i must say that these look WAY cuter!

Those are lo-cal, right, and with loads of fiber? ;)
Don’t work/study too hard, Hannah!

My ideal lazy day breakfast would be waffles, but donuts would run a close second. The ones you made are adorable and it makes me want to stitch up a couple just for the heck of it.
September 9, 2008 at 7:42 pm
hee, cute donuts. my ideal lazy-day breakfast would be cinnamon rolls and fruit salad with lots of strawberries.

September 9, 2008 at 10:56 pm
My lazy day breakfast will be one served by my husband. LOL
September 9, 2008 at 11:50 pm
CUTE DONUTS! I want.
Amen on the lazy days of summer. I’ve been very grateful to have a few hours of lazing around in the morning before my college courses start in a couple weeks. How those hours will be missed…

September 10, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Being lazy is fun & you deserve to be as lazy as you want, if you ask me. My lazy day breakfast would probably be granola & yogurt. It takes about 30 seconds to plop into a bowl, but provides me with plenty of energy & lots of protein for the day ahead. But I also love to made roasted potatoes, and since I don’t peel them, they’re really easy to pull off with minimal effort.
Have I missed seeing your famous tattoo, or have you not revealed it yet? Just curious. :o)
September 11, 2008 at 12:48 am
I love those donuts!
My favorite lazy day breakfasts would definitely be pancakes or french toast drowned in a berry syrup and black coffee. Oh and cartoons. Can’t have a lazy day without those. =D
September 11, 2008 at 3:21 am
Love the donuts!
Every morning I make a lazy days breakfast: precooked whole grain flakes with hot milk. Good way of getting your calcium and fibres and very quick too.
September 11, 2008 at 4:17 am
Too cute. I think it is not fair that you can cook and make cute things out of yarn and thread…I can not sew to save my life.
September 11, 2008 at 9:22 am
Adorable! I saw these in “Plus You” and have wanted to try to make them…but where does the time go??? My favorite doughnuts are yours!
September 12, 2008 at 5:36 am
Oh they are soooooooooo cute! I think I would have to take a bite just to make sure they weren’t real!
September 13, 2008 at 7:46 am
I’m so glad your schedule is more leisurely now! you deserve it, and sometimes I think a relaxed morning is essential to sanity (mine anyway!)
September 17, 2008 at 12:56 pm
So adorable! I want to put one in my pocket and carry it around with me all day!
